Biography
From his very first public performances pianist Ralf Taal (b 1974) has charmed the audience with the colourful and refined sound. Taal’s sound fantasies range from powerful drama and booming depth to gossamery utopia worlds. Together with Mati Mikalai and Marko Martin, they form the new generation of Estonian pianists that made a powerful entrance in the 1990s and quickly gained the leading position: in 1992, Taal gave his first recital, in 1993, he won the All-Estonian competition dedicated to Grieg’s 150th anniversary, in 1994, the Estonian pianists’ and young musicians’ competition Con brio; in 1995, he was awarded Special Prize for the youngest finalist at the Schubert International Competition in Dortmund.
Taal has graduated from the class of Maigi Pakri and Prof Bruno Lukk at the Tallinn Music High School in 1992. His studies continued at the Estonian Academy of Music with Lauri Väinmaa and Prof Peep Lassmann (graduated 1997), the latter being also the supervisor of his post-graduate studies. Taal has attended master classes by renowned pianists like Kalle Randalu, Arbo Valdmaa, Boris Berman et al.
In the 1990s, Taal began his active and versatile concert activities. He has been performing both as soloist and in ensemble at home and abroad. He has co-operated with several acclaimed conductors like Paavo Järvi, Olari Elts, Eri Klas et al and his repertoire includes more than 20 piano concertos. Vocalists and instrumentalists alike appreciate him as an ensemble partner. In 2011, he was awarded the Annual Prize of the Estonian Culture Endowment. Taal is a long-time pianist-répétiteur in the Estonian National Opera as well as a teacher at the Estonian Academy of Music and Tallinn Georg Ots Music School.

Press resonance
… this concerto has an infectious drive and generally superb playing which carries the extra weight of its extended thematic development. (Classical CD Reviews, Nov 2006)
... puhkpillimuusika-hiiuks osutus juba eelmainitud prantsuse flöödikunstnik Stéphane Réty, kes esitas koos klavessinist Irina Zahharenkovaga XVIII sajandi saksa flöödisonaatide kahe poolega kava: Graun, Hasse, W. F. Bach, Telemann. (Mart Jaanson, Sirp, 05.08.11, Estonia, whole article)

RÉMI BOUCHER
Classical guitarist
Rémi Boucher – one of the best guitarist in the world today, he has won numerous Grand Prix’s and first prizes in many international competitions, is a renowned teacher and professor of the instrument, has brilliant technique and multitude of feelings in his play.
Rémi Boucher was born in 1964 in Rouyn-Noranda (Québec, Canada). He studied the classical guitar in the Montreal Conservatory with Jean Vallières and afterwards completed his studies in Spain (with J Henriquez, J L Rodrigo, V Mikulka, David Russell, M Barrueco), in Belgium at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (with V van Puijenbroeck) and in Switzerland at the Basel Academy with O Ghiglia. Those travels would not have been accomplished without the aid of the “Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec” and the Canada Council, which not only offered him many grants, but the Sylva Gelber Award, making Rémi Boucher the first guitarist in 30 years to have won this honor!
In addition to his many national and international prices, in less than 18 months, Rémi Boucher has conquered Europe, America and Asia winning at the unanimity the first prize of five of the most important international music competitions (Alessandria in Italy, Andrès Segovia in Palma de Mallorca in Spain, Havana in Cuba, Mauro Guiliani in Turin, and Fernando Sor in Roma).
Since that great success, he was invited by many major symphony orchestras in all over the world, which gave him the opportunities to play up to ten of the greatest guitar concertos conducted in some cases by the famous Cuban composer Léo Brouwer. Because of the success coming out of his concerts his career expanded very fast and allowed him to play, to gives master classes and to participate as member of international juries in many of the most important competitions, music festivals and universities of the world with regularly renewed invitations.
His love and relationship with other cultures, his interest for all kinds of instruments and his work to create new ideas, brought him to discover new technical possibilities, which allow him to enlarge the capabilities of the instrument. Pioneer in that domain, he collaborated closely with conductors to create a repertory that could serve those new musical possibilities. To study those techniques Rémi Boucher has also created a series of his own compositions and a new technical method. His last success was a fruit of 7 years of works in collaboration with his favorite conductor and pianist Jacques Marchand from Canada that composed for him one of the biggest and most impressive concerto ever composed for classical guitar and symphony orchestra. The concerto is now published in two versions, one for guitar and symphony orchestra and the other for solo guitar. His last critics in Austria told that Rémi Boucher has no technical and musical limits, the concerto of Marchand was sub-titled “concerto for three hands…”!
His repertoire also includes all of the most famous guitar concertos (Rodrigo, Villa-Lobos, Tedesco, Ponce, Torroba, Brouwer, Abril, Guiliani and Vivaldi) just as well as the most interesting works for solo guitar from the Renaissance to the Modern music. In 2012, he premiered Peeter Vähi’s Guitar Concerto No 2 (Antarctic Concerto) together with Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta and Maestro Andres Mustonen. Rémi Boucher is especially known for his excellent interpretation of impressionist and Spanish music that were strongly acclaimed by the critics in all over the world.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of India’s independence, Rémi Boucher was invited by the Canadian Governor General to perform in concert. As a representative of Canadian artists, he was also invited by the President of India for a meeting between both countries. These stupendous and rarely seen successes have definitely set the pace for Rémi’s brilliant career. In October 2013, Rémi Boucher performed in the Great Hall of St Peterburg Philharmonic together with the St Peterburg Academic Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Mikhail Leontyev.
“Rémi Boucher has fire, passion, zest and poetry and he has them in spades. There is hope for the guitar when it is play like this…” (International Guitar Magazine)
Rémi Boucher plays on a guitar built by Joachim Schneider, Germany.

Flöödid
Klassikaline flööt, barokk-, renessanss- ja plokkfköödid, etnilised flöödid... Born in the Flutish Kingdom!
Biograafia
Flötist Neeme Punder (1958) on üks aktiivsemaid varajase muusikaga tegelejaid Eestis.
The Art Russica, Sebra, Barokko a tre, Vanamuusika Akadeemia jpt. Käesoleval hetkel kuulub ta nüüdismuusikaansambli Reval Ensemble tuumikusse, samuti ansambli Elavad klassikud ning Rahvusooper Estonia puhkpillikvinteti koosseisu.
Neeme Punderil on ilmunud sooloplaat “The Flutish Kingdom” (Erdenklang, 2001).
(Vahur Luhtsalu, Sirp, 06.10.00)
...mõned lood jäävad ehk teistest rohkem meelde. Nende seas anonüümse XIV sajandi autori väga lüüriline “Ave donna”, mida sopran Helle Mustonen ja Neeme Punder flöödil esitavad kaunikõlaliste legato’dega, nende muusikaline dialoog mõjub ühtaegu nii nukrameelselt tundeliselt kui elutargalt järelemõtlikult. Classical, Baroque, Renaissance and ethnic flutes, recorders... Born in the Flutish Kingdom!
Biography
Flautist Neeme Punder (1958) is one of the most active early music players and researchers in Estonia. He is highly rated both as flute soloist as well as chamber musician. His musical growth-bed for more than 26 years has been the early music consort Hortus Musicus. This afore-mentioned long-lasting career in the consort has given him enormous knowledge in early music interpretation and historical instruments. He has participated in all the ensemble’s most important tours and performances at festivals and prestigious concert halls in Europe, Israel, the USA, Japan and Russia. By today Neeme Punder is considered to be one of the most respected early music performers and specialists. For many years he has been the artistic director and enthusiastic leader of Viljandi Early Music Festival as well as initiator of several concert series and festival Flutish Kingdom. 1998–2005 Neeme Punder was the artistic director of Viljandi Linnakapell − the oldest early music consort in Estonia.
As a versatile musician he is also held in high esteem as performer of contemporary music and first performer of several works by Estonian composers like Peeter Vähi, Galina Grigorjeva, René Eespere, Helena Tulve, Toivo Tulev and Tõnu Kõrvits to name just a few. His stage-partners have been Aleksey Lubimov, Tatiana Grindenko, Gidon Kremer, Paul Hillier, Natalia Gutman, Daniel Raiskin, Oleg Kagan, Aina Kalnciema, Matti Helin, Patrick Galois, David James, Tõnu Kaljuste, Ain Anger, Toomas Vavilov et al. He has also played in several ensembles (among others Hortus Musicus 1979–2005, Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Estonian Baroque Soloists, Nyyd Ensemble et al) as well as international projects like the Finnish-Estonian Baroque Orchestra, Art Russica, Sebra, Barocco a Tre, Early Music Academy and many others. Currently he belongs to the core of contemporary music ensemble − Reval Ensemble − and also group Elavad Klassikud (‘Living Classics’) and the woodwind quintet of the Estonian National Opera.
Neeme Punder’s solo album The Flutish Kingdom has been released by Erdenklang, 2001. His flute solos have been recorded in flute concerto by René Eespere (Antes, 1998), in Flatus II and Trivium by the same composer (Antes, 2001), in the suite by Johannes Talli (Emmanuel Recording Studios, 2003), in Scenario and Vaikiv Odalisk by Lepo Sumera (Megadisc Classics, 2003), in flute concerto A Chant of Bamboo by Peeter Vähi (ERP, 2006). He has been doing numerous radio recordings and has also been presented on more than 20 records with Hortus Musicus.
A huge part of Neeme Punder’s work is taken by teaching activities. He has been teaching flute and recorder in Viljandi Music School, at the Latvian Academy of Music and at Tallinn Music High School (since 1995) and is professor at the Viljandi Academy of Culture by Tartu University and lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Music. He has conducted early music masterclasses in Finland, Germany, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and elsewhere.
Neeme Punder graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music in 1981 as flutist under the supervision by Elmar Peäske and has completed his education with Wilbert Hazelzet, Walter van Hauwe and Marjike Miessen in the Netherlands. He has been awarded the Grand Prix at the Estonian Wind Players’ Competition in 1979.

The third extraordinary gentleman of that evening was Neeme Punder (Baroque flutes). While the other members of ensemble left something to be desired in the dynamic scale, then his musical landscape was full of mountains and valleys. The most enjoyable was Vivaldi’s sonata for flute, cello and basso continuo. (Heili Vaus, Sirp, 31.03.08)
“Vaikiv Odalisk” by Lepo Sumera in Neeme Punder’s performance was the highlight of the concert. (Vahur Luhtsalu, Sirp, 06.10.00)

It calls for virtuoso technique as well as interpretative skills – both of which are evident in Hando Nahkur’s playing. J. S. Bach’s “Chaconne” /.../ interpretation of this monumental piece is outstanding technically and musically (Free Estonian Word, 10 / 2010, New York)

Interpretation 6/6...
(Virve Normet, Muusika, 9 / 2010, Estonia)
Veebiajakiri Zeit Online valis Nahkuri CD kogu maailma klassikalisest muusikast aasta kolme parima plaadi hulka, põhjendades oma valikut sõnadega: “Hando Nahkur on üks suurtest üllatustest klaverimaastikul. (Priit Kuusk, Muusika, 2 / 2011, Estonia)
...mina tahan sellest ettepoole tõsta Bach-Busoni “Chaconne’i”, eeskätt selle meisterliku kõlakorralduse poolest. Teose esituse lähtepunkt on küll akadeemiline, kuid teostus küllaltki vabameelne. (Leelo Kõlar, Sirp, 15.04.11, Estonia, whole article)

HELE-RIIN UIB
Percussion
Hele-Riin Uib is one of the most attractive female percussionists whose music-making unites professionalism, punctuality, swift beat and extraordinary power. She has often been called “a rough diamond”, “an energy bomb” etc.
Biography
Hele-Riin Uib was born in Estonia. Since early childhood the little girl was surrounded by drums; through her step-father she had a close contact with playing as well as making percussion instruments. It so happened that at the age of 13 Hele-Riin started an independent life, though this did not hamper her studies of percussions at the Tallinn Georg Ots Music School. In 2004, she graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music with BA and in 2007 with MA. In the course of 2004–2009 Hele-Riin studied percussions also at the Helsinki Metropolia University, though unlike at the Estonian Academy of Music she concentrated here on jazz (vibraphone) and ethnic (Africa, Cuba, Brazil) percussion instruments like congas, timbales, djembe, etc. Drop by drop she has collected knowledge from different master classes: Arttu Takalo, Juha Tanninen, Tomas Jimeno Diaz, Tommi Rautiainen, Bruno Korpela, Wolf Kerschek, Linda Maxey, Michael Udow, Brian Melvin, and Stanislaw Skoczynski. In 2010, she studied the art of taiko in Japan under the supervision by Emiko Taba.
In 2001–2004, she was a percussion player at the Estonian National Opera Symphony Orchestra. Also, Hele-Riin has been guest-artist with Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Estonian Piano Orchestra and NYYD Ensemble. However, she enjoys most playing in duos where the small staff offers more improvisation and creative approach to music like in the duo with the Japanese taiko-player Ichitaro, duo Double Stroke with Madis Metsamart (principal percussionist of Estonian National Symphony Orchestra) and with Aleksandra Kremenetski, to name just a few.
Hele-Riin says that rhythm is the heart of music. It seems that this heart beats in a cruel rhythm and quick tempo because in her schedule there are hardly any days off. The afore-mentioned qualities have made her a highly sought-after musician and concert tours have taken her to many countries as well as made her a frequent guest in recording studios.
