VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING ALTERNATIVE
OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS' BETTER INTEGRATION INTO LABOUR MARKET

September 2016 − August 2018

ABOUT

29.08.2018

PROJECT FINAL CONFERENCE

ERP TOGETHER WITH PARTNERS FROM LATVIA AND SWEDEN HAS ACCOMPLISHED ITS TWO-YEARS INTERNATIONAL PROJECT DEVOTED TO EDUCATION OF YOUNG MUSICIANS AND BROADENING THEIR POSSIBILITIES AT THE LABOUR MARKET.

The project ”Alternative possibilities of professional education for Young Musicians for their better integration at the labour market” was carried out with the financial support of the programme of European Commission Erasmus+. On the 27th of August 2018 at the conference in the museum of Riga History and Navigation (Latvia) Herman Braun Foundation in co-operation with ERP and famous Swedish group Real Group and their vocal academy presented the results of their work − developed by them programme of additional studies for young people and youth − students of musical educational institutions. It was developed by specialists in the sphere of music − musicians, teachers, producers and managers . Young musicians often meet problems at the labour market.  The competition is very strong, but at the same time the demand is huge. How to find his/her niche and listener? Can the person present his/her product and sell it to the final consumer − the listener, by himself, without any support or help?  In schools and colleges the young people are not taught how to do it. Even being high class specialists, when they leave the educational institution they are hardly adapted to the local and international musical labour market.

Specialists are sure that the standard programme can be successfully supplemented by such modules as enterprising activity in the sphere of music, usage of new information and communication technologies (especially in the content of the art of composing and arrangement) and professional foreign language because the musical market is extremely specific and international. International specialists are absolutely sure that there is an extreme need in developing and introducing new individual study plans for some young musicians. It is important to do it in accordance of their abilities and also taking into consideration the possible schedule of their studies – many young people travel to concerts, to competitions and master classes. The most important aspect in becoming a real musician is visiting master class of the “stars” and concert practice. This aspect is sometimes in the background and as the result we get excellently prepared musicians who cannot “work” and cooperate with the listeners and who do not know another school of performing music except the one which was in the frames of the programme of their school or college. It does not give the opportunity to open the potential and negatively influences the musician in becoming a personality, an individual. In the frames of the project the specialists tested different aspects of the studying programme More than 200 young people participated in master classes for vocalists, piano players, flute players, percussionists and string instruments players, future composers. Master classes took place in Riga, Stockholm and Tartu. The young people took part in more than 20 concerts together with adult musicians-as solo players and as members of orchestra. The organizers of the project are grateful to all the musical schools and colleges of Latvia, Estonia and Sweden for their feedback, participation in different activities and their input into the methodological part of the project.

The project was finished unusually-a contact stock exchange of musicians, employers and managers took place. The participants had the possibilities to find partners or even a job, to exchange experiences, to discuss new ideas or simply to find in oneself new potential and inspiration. In conclusion of round tables the participants presented three remarkable projects − a cycle of concerts, an international project and a festival.

We think that these ideas will become reality in the nearest future and will find its grateful listeners in several countries of Europe.

ERASMUS+ project “VET alternative opportunities for young musicians’ better integration into labour market”

Project number: 2016-1-LV01-KA202-022695
Duration period: 01.09.2016.−31.08.2018

ERP, together with partner from Latvia − Herman Braun Foundation − and partner from Sweden − The Real Group AB − is starting the project MUSICVET to combat youth unemployment.

Youth unemployment is a common challenge for European countries, and there is a necessity to modernize VET programmes in the music field, because young musicians are in the risk group for unemployment. The activities will be carried in three partner countries: Latvia, Estonia, and Sweden. The target group of the project is VET learners in the field of music from the age 14 till the age 24.

As for composition of the partnership Latvia always was known with its brilliant music traditions, the names of Latvian musicians like G. Kremers, M. Majskis, E. Garanca are known through all the world, as they are leaders in their profession − in music. In the same way Estonia has P. Vähi and Sweden has strong vocal traditions and various brilliant names (ABBA). These potential and professional skills have to be developed in the future through modern vocational training programmes.

The project is conforming such European priorities as improving achievement in relevant and high-level basic and transversal competences in a lifelong learning perspective and further strengthening key competences in VET curricula. The project will promote work-based learning in all its forms, with special attention to apprenticeship-type training. Activities foresee practical workshops in mixed groups with high class field professionals in learning rooms and audio studios, so learners’ professional skills for further work will be improved.

The intellectual output of the project is elaboration of alternative learning programme modules for VET learners in the music field, and approbation of the programme in VET educational institutions.

Main results of the projects suspected be the following:

- improved professional skills in music through apprenticeship approach;

- proposed innovative VET learning programme modules for VET learners;

- improved key and transversal competences of learners concerning foreign language skills, entrepreneurship competences, and ICT skills;

- raised effectiveness and improved flexibility of VET learning with the proposed module for individual plans for learners;

- raised employability of young musicians by providing practical learning modules.

The new learning programme will give long term impact on the target group, and further could be used in all VET institutions in different artistic fields.
